Pets on SNCF Trains, TGV INOUI, and TGV Lyria
Traveling with pets on SNCF and its high-speed services, including TGV INOUI and TGV Lyria, requires some preparation to ensure a smooth journey across French railways. Whether you're traveling within France or between neighboring countries, here’s what you need to know:
Pets on French Trains: You can take up to 2 pets or pet carriers on trains in France, but you need to purchase a ticket for them first. Pets are classified into 3 types:
- Small Pets: Pets weighing less than 6kg should travel in a carrier that measures 45 x 30 x 25 cm. The carrier should either be placed at your feet or on your knee.
- Large Pets: Pets weighing more than 6kg must travel at your feet and must wear a muzzle for the entire trip. Their ticket costs 50% of the usual price for a second-class ticket, based on the number of kilometres travelled.
- Guide Dogs: Guide dogs travel for free and do not normally wear a muzzle.
Important Information for Booking Pet Tickets:
At RailClick, we are unable to book pet tickets. In cases where a pet ticket is required (such as for larger dogs or specific routes), you must contact SNCF directly to arrange the pet ticket reservation.
While we can assist you with booking your train ticket, in specific cases, particularly for large pets (over 6 kg) or certain routes, SNCF must handle the pet reservation. Please contact their customer service or visit their website to make arrangements for your pet ticket.
How to Purchase Pet Tickets: You have a few options for purchasing a pet ticket:
- In person: You can buy a pet ticket at a train station in France before departure (at the kiosk or from the vending machine).
- By phone: You can also call SNCF’s free number at +33 1 84 94 36 35 (#85 for English) and speak to a representative who can sell you a pet ticket. The price for a pet ticket is 7€.
Traveling with Pets on TGV Lyria: Passengers traveling with pets on TGV Lyria (France to Switzerland) must follow the rules for cross-border travel:
- Small Pets Traveling in a Carrier: Small domestic pets can travel on board TGV Lyria in a carrier no bigger than the maximum dimensions of 45 x 30 x 25 cm. They must be placed on your lap or at your feet. From 23/06/2022, passengers must purchase one ticket per carrier at a fixed cost of €7.
- Dogs Traveling on a Leash and with a Muzzle: Dogs must be muzzled and travel on your feet. Passengers must purchase a ticket at a fixed price of €20 for the dog.
For travel on TGV Lyria, please contact us directly for your booking and ensure all necessary documents are in order before travel. For any large pets or other special arrangements, please reach out to SNCF.
For other train services such as TGV INOUI, INTERCITES, and TER:
- Small Pets (weighing less than 6 kg): Your pet must travel in a carrier (maximum size: 45 x 30 x 25 cm) and can sit on your lap or at your feet. Book their ticket at the same time as yours, and make sure you have all the necessary documents for your animal.
- Large Pets (weighing more than 6 kg): Your dog must wear a muzzle for the duration of the trip and travel at your feet. Their ticket costs 50% of the usual price for a second-class ticket. Book their ticket at the same time as yours and make sure you have all the necessary documents for your animal.
- Guide Dogs: Guide dogs travel free of charge and are not required to wear a muzzle. There is no need to book a ticket for them.
- Booking with TER in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Pays de La Loire, or Nouvelle Aquitaine: Due to technical difficulties, it is currently not possible to book a pet ticket for journeys with a TER connection in these regions. You must purchase the pet ticket at a Self-Serve Kiosk after booking your ticket online or through the app.
- Booking in Pays de la Loire: In this region, small pets in carriers travel free of charge and do not require a separate ticket.
